Here's a second vote for Gallery2.

One of my users has 5800 photos from _this year_ in their G2 installation.
They are spread out across several albums, but Gallery has pretty good 
management tools for creating folders, sub-galleries, etc.  The caching 
and thumbnailing stuff seems to work pretty good too.

If you end up installing it, I highly recommend doing a subversion
installation and signing up for the security announcements.  That way when 
you get the inevitable email about a new security release, you can just 
ssh in and 'svn switch' to the latest tag.  svn makes managing updates for 
web apps much less painful.

After the 'svn switch' you need to hit your Gallery URL in a browser, and
it'll automatically prompt you to do updates to the DB schema, dump 
cached files, etc, as necessary.
