Ron, I had a similar problem with Red Hat 4.1 and Metro X when I ran it. Try using Xf86config in the /usr/X11/bin dir. It asks a bunch of questions about your mouse, keyboard, monitor and video card. As long as your card and monitor are supported and you know all the vertical and horizantol syncs of you monitor, and so forth it should work.
