I might as well chime in on my own posting. One problem is that you don't specify which version of Unix you are using, whether Linux, BSD, or Solaris. Personally, I prefer to use emacs as my primary text editor. I use it as I would an IDE. You can compile and debug from within emacs. For more serious debugging, I prefer to use DDD (http://www.gnu.org/software/ddd/). DDD sits on top of GDB or DBX. I became a believer when I had to debug a btree database problem.
