A specific case of the "document everything" mentality. Configuration management tools are great when you have dozens of nodes all more or less alike. They're not so good when you have dozens of nodes none of which are alike. Right now I'm in the latter space, wrangling dozens of servers which are all different, and each one is documented as a set of changes from a stock installation. -- Rich P.
