Of course they do. And like any tool, they're the right tool for some
jobs and the wrong tool for many others.

I previously pointed out that I disable the firewall service on the
3K-odd machines I manage. We don't need firewalls here. We have
intrusion detection systems and firewalls watching and protecting our
network zones. Local firewalls are the wrong tool for us.
