Lines: 59 Approved: linux-announce at news.ornl.gov (Lars Wirzenius) Message-ID: <cola-liw-832701774-16078-0 at liw.clinet.fi> NNTP-Posting-Host: liw.clinet.fi X-Original-Date: Tue, 21 May 1996 19:47:37 +0300 (EET DST) -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- As some of you may have noticed, the Linux 2.0 development has reached the so-called "pre2.0" kernels, which are test-kernels before the final 2.0 release meant to shake out the last few bugs so that we don't get caught in the "x.0 syndrome". These pre2.0 kernels are available at the normal kernel ftp sites: the two sites I directly upload to are ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/Linux/PEOPLE/Linus/v1.3 ftp://ftp.cs.helsinki.fi/pub/Software/Linux/Kernel/v1.3 but you may want to (nay, make that "you really should") check out a Linux mirror site nearer to you before you get it from either of these sites. The current pre2.0 kernel is linux-pre2.0.7 (you'll know that it's a pre2.0 by the fact that the kernel reports the version number as "1.99.x"), and that will be the last pre2.0 for some time - I'll be away in Germany for a week. As such I hope you will all test it out exhaustively. As I'll be away from my mail, I hope any potential problems can be discussed on the mailing lists and newsgroups, but I hope to get the problem reports Cc'd to me if you think the seriousness warrants it. But before mailing a bug-report, see: NOTE! 2.0 has some differences from 1.2.13, and if you are upgrading from that release (or just generally from an older kernel) you should read the linux/Documentation/Changes file carefully, as that tries to explain some of the problems you may encounter due to those differences. It is counter- productive to send me a bug-report about "top dumps core", because that's a known problem with a known (user-level) fix. Also note that you should have a reasonably new version of gcc: gcc-2.5.8 is known to produce incorrect code under certain circumstances, and gcc-2.7.2 is recommended (the kernel will refuse to compile with anything older than gcc-2.6.x). I hope people will take the opportunity to test this out, as the more testing it gets the more likely we are to find any obscure bugs. If you feel too worried about it, I can only say that our computer science department is now running pre2.0 on both the web- and ftp-server and on the department mail server.
