Marcos,
Linux is essentially a Unix derivative. Most Unix systems are produced by
vendors, such as Compaq (Tru64), Sun (Solaris), HP(HP-UX). The Unix systems
are generally derived from Unix which was developed at Bell Labs in the
'70s. Linux itself is free, and for the most part looks and feels like Unix.
Another free Unix is FreeBSD, which is derived from the Berkeley variant of
AT&T's Unix. You can download Linux free of charge from several download
sites. There are several commercial distributions which put Linux together
on CDs. The major distributions are Red Hat (6.1), SuSe(6.3), Caldera
OpenLinux 2.3, Corel Linuxos, Slackware, and several others. Most of these
vendors have ftp sites where you can download the entire distribuiton, or
even do an ftp install online. There is a site where you can order some of
the distributions at a low cost, such as Cheap Bytes
(http://www.cheapbytes.com). All versions of Unix and Linux support multiple
concurrent users, multi-tasking, etc. While there are many applications on
Windows that have not been ported to Linux and Unix, there is now a wide
variety of products making Linux and Unix a viable alternative to Windows on
the desktop.
