John, Some of your email has been bouncing. Verizon DSL uses PPPoE which gives you a dynamic IP. Mediaone also gives you a dynamic IP, but Mediaone also assigns you a host name which is updated when your IP address changes. Don't know if Verizon assigns a host name. Mediaone host names used to be your email user name, eg. gaf.ne.mediaone.net. Now they use the MAC address of your NIC. I don't know if they allow you to request your email userid any longer. Many of us kept our old host names. I think RCN also uses the MAC address as part of the host name. Not all DSL providers use PPPoE and some will provide a static IP.
