Linux for kids

I am in Houston and haven't heard of it, but that isn't saying much.

At our church, we put up a LAN with 13 donated machines (Compaq's with
windows), and we use Star Office 5.1 to teach Kindergarten and seniors
how to use a word processor and e-mail.

The K kids are great, except for the ones whose parents are afraid
the kid will break something on their own computers.

The Seniors are really special because they are so afraid of it.
But once they get going, they love it.  It seems grand kids are more
likely to e-mail than call or write a postal service paper letter!

On the seniors side, eyesight seems to be a limiting factor.

I think HAL-PC (Houston Area League of PC Users, www.hal-pc.org) has
a group that is taking older PCs (they don't even want anything less
than a pentium now :( ), put them in OK condition, and help schools
put them in class rooms, wire schools, etc.

If you hear of a Linux K-12 project in Texas, please let me know!
