unresolve pppon error

I followed the ppp HOWTO presented on ONLAMP. On a
command line I invoke pppon. The DTR and other lamps on the external
modem light and remain lit for a minute or so and afterwards turn-off,
no activity. I've spend several evenings and a weekend and I still
cannot decipher the error message in the connect-error file. What is
wrong with my pppon file? I'm using Red Hat 6.2 and an external modem
(OLITEC model Total Office). Must the script that chat reads be a bash
file?

Thanks for your help.

PS: the ppphowto is on O'Reilly's WEB site ONLAMP, the urls are

pages)

The connect-error file I displays:

sh: unexpected EOF while looking for `''
sh: -c: line 2: syntax error

The pppon file displays:

connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /root/chatscript"
