I used to have a similar problem. In my case, the hard disk appeard to simply shut down. Since this was intermittent, I tried different things like reseating cables, replacing cables. It even occurred after changing motherboards and hard drives. Eventually, the power supply just died. I have not had the problem since. Power supplies can causes a lot of problems.
