Redhat 8 the hard way... adding GNOME afterwards

   At this point I'm expecting that you _are_ indeed missing an
important GNOME package.  Would you mind showing us (or at least me)
the output of:
$ rpm -qa '*gnome*'

   I'd like to compare it to a working 8.0 box to see what's missing.
