First of all: Do you have the drivers from NVidia? I am not
sure if the open source drivers support twinview for nvidia
cards. While I don't have a 1000FX, These settings work
for my Laptop (GeForce2):

#
# First, you need a 'monitor' section for ech of your monitors
# In my case, its the Laptop LCD and the external CRT.
# make sure to comment out and 'DisplaySize' parameters.
# it will not prevent it from working, but some programs,
# most notable OpenOffice, will get the aspect ratio wrong
#

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Monitor0"

ModelName "Dell 1600x1200 Laptop Display Panel"
        HorizSync 31.5 - 90.0
        VertRefresh 59.0 - 85.0
