The dual-layer discs are still scarce and expensive (over $5/disc even from the cheapest online discounters), but you can happily use your drive with cheap single-layer discs (under $0.50 at retail) until the dual-layer ones are affordable. Dual-layer discs also have much lower writing speeds (4x vs 16x). It's not clear whether that gap will ever close; it may be inherent to the medium.
