Console Management Servers

We are looking for some terminal servers for our lab but all the ones I have
found are very high in price especially when I can always bring my laptop
into the lab and connect with my cisco cable and user teraterm or something
similar.  Any cost effective ideas?  Could I get one and then plug a switch
or a hub into it to split it and plug into more servers?
