Please help with installation problem on IBM NetVista desktop

Any idea what hard drive controller is on the system (can you use the 
rescue function and do an 'lspci' or similar)?  Is installing 4.0/Etch an 
option?  I'd imagine you might have better luck with it if the problem is 
hardware support.  I haven't used that model myself, just offering ideas.
