Verizon is spending a bundle to build out the last mile - they have to 
compete with an infrastructure that's largely in place. My FIOS 
installation last week took nearly a full day (for a variety of 
frustrating reasons), for which I paid a princely sum of $29. Little 
wonder I had to lock in to a two-year agreement :-).
