If you're coding in PHP (not sure about other languages) use Pear DB, 
MDB or MDB2.  It makes it easier to make your db code portable across 
many DB backends.  I've written a few PHP apps with MDB2 and been able 
to use the code with MySQL and Postgresql databases.
