Checking memory and BIOS (was Re: Problem upgrading memory on Dell Inspiron 5100)

sudo dmidecode 

provides detailed information about all the hardware in your system 
(also biosdecode).  The man page says it's possible for the data to be 
unreliable but it's a lot better than nothing.
