ubuntu upgrade

some months ago i did an on-line upgrade on my asus netbook
from ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. it went smoothly with zero
problems.

yesterday i did the same upgrade on my panasonic cf-50.
the login screen looked fine, but when i went to log in,
gnome wouldn't come up -- just a blank screen with a bit
of flicker. logging in remotely works fine.

what are my options? how would i best reinstall just gnome?
any suggestions welcome.
