Trying to get Linux to recognize Creative Labs CD-Rom.

You are better off using Slackware with kernel 2.0 or later. It probably
will recognize both your CD-rom and your network card without recompiling.

Maybe you did not correctly mount the CD-ROM. The mount command is
as follows

mount /dev/cdrom /mount_directory -t is09660

where /dev/cdrom has a symbolic link to /dev/scd0 if it is a SCSI CDROM
or the appropriate non-scsi CDROM device otherwise.

Slackware versions with kernels 2.0+ automatically mount the CDROM upon
startup, and the setup for a supported network card only require the
uncommenting of the appropriate module driver in /etc/modules???? and
the appropriate hosts and rc.d inet files.
