I am also a Waltham RCN user (using OpenBSD). I have one of the newer 3COM DOCSIS-compliant cable-modems. If you change NICs for any reason, you need to power cycle the modem to have RCN acknowledge the new MAC address and reassign a DHCP IP address. Hope that helps.
