new to linux, but no KDE

All,
I just attempted to install Linux Mandrake 7.0 on my PC laptop, but upon rebooting, all I got was a blank screen. I figured out that I could switch to console mode with the penguin and login from there, but I am unable to open KDE. I'm sure my X isn't working and I've tried to correct the problem through xf86config, but to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions? My laptop video specs is 60Hz, capable of 1600 X 1200 resolution, ATI Rage Mobility P AGP 2X video card.

Jon
