On my desktop box, I have an account I login as, but being a Senior Admin/Developer, I do also have the root password. I don't generally need to be in as root unless I am installing libraries or something that needs to be available to the root user only, or the system itself. In general, if a desktop box is setup well in the first place, it is rare that an end-user needs root access, unless they are installing system-wide apps, which probably is a job for the IT/HelpDesk group.
