I booted my freshly burned Knoppix disk, and it is faster. If I do
two hdparm tests in immediate succession, the second now clocks in at
1 MB/second. 33% improvement!

But still way short of the 27 MB/s when I boot back to Ubuntu.

Does Knoppix have USB 2.0? Is there some magic boot parameter needed
to turn it on? A detail: I did have the disk present as Knoppix was
booting.
