So you have Linux on both the server and client side? Are you sure you
want to be running Samba?

Before dealing with more ugly workarounds for Samba, if you're not
required to run it, you might want to consider NFS or sshfs instead. You
can't beat the security model for sshfs, if that matters to you, and it
performs well enough to stream HD video over a LAN. But of course NFS is
the more general purpose solution, with high performance and wide client
support.
