History is necessary for a backup system in the strictest sense. The 
purpose of a backup system is disaster recovery: restoring a system or 
data to a good, working, usable state. If your data are corrupted and 
your one deep history is of that corrupted data then the backup cannot 
be used for recovery. History is necessary to restore a system or data 
to a known or discoverable good point.
