Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

Bad news on my Averatec laptop - the X server is out of order. It
appears to be coming up - the text display is gone - but I'm getting a
black screen with no cursor and no desktop. I'm poking around to see
what it will take to set it right; haven't found anything about this so
far online.
